Focusing our Grantmaking to Meet the Needs of Today

May 20, 2025

As the pandemic recedes and many nonprofit organizations we support face potential cuts in federal and state funding, The Healthcare Foundation of NJ continues to focus on how we can best use our limited dollars to have the greatest impact. After careful consideration, our Board of Trustees approved changes in the focus of our grantmaking that will guide us in the coming years.

To better meet the tremendous need in the community, The Healthcare Foundation of NJ will now focus our resources to support medical and behavioral health services that are at the core to the Foundation’s mission.  We have always recognized and continue to appreciate the importance of the wider determinants of health – drivers like nutritious food, a clean environment, or affordable, safe housing. At the same time, as the only healthcare foundation in our community, we see a critical need to support core medical and behavioral health services with our limited funding.

Moving forward, HFNJ will no longer entertain proposals dealing with: food insecurity, homelessness services (unless specifically related to medical and/or behavioral health needs), rent stipends, housing costs, legal needs, general transportation, research, students’ health needs while enrolled in college or university institutions, and general social service case management – unless strictly related to medical and /or mental health needs.

  • Current grantees

There will be no changes to any currently approved grants, and all scheduled payments will be made.  Grantees who are eligible for renewal may apply for funding for their project though our grant renewal process.  However, please note that our focus will be on projects that support core medical and behavioral health needs.

  • Future applicants

HFNJ will accept applications only in the core areas of medical and behavioral health care: projects focused on providing clinical care, hospital-based care or capital grants, behavioral health care, work force training, and/or public health and prevention.

  • Questions?

We recognize that many organizations and projects cross-cut different aspects of the healthcare field.  Multi-faceted projects, or projects deemed worthy of special consideration, if appropriate, may still be reviewed.  We welcome you to reach out to our Executive Director/CEO Michael Schmidt at mschmidt@hfnj.org with any questions.

  • Looking Forward…

For nearly 30 years, The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has been committed to elevating the quality of community healthcare, reducing disparities in access, and promoting the infusion of compassion and humanism into our healthcare system.

This mission of ensuring that each person is treated with respect, empathy and care continues to be the underpinning of our work and propels us forward.  We look forward to partnering with you as we work together towards strengthening the health and well-being of those in Newark and its environs and the Jewish Greater MetroWest community.
