HFNJ Announces Initiative Providing $1.5 Million in Core Operating Grants

January 20, 2026

Across the greater Newark area, nonprofit healthcare and human service organizations are being asked to do more with less. Reimbursement rates are shrinking. Public funding is tightening. And yet the needs of our communities have never been greater.

That is why we’re excited to share: The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey is investing up to $1.5 million in unrestricted, core operating support.

The first 13 of these core support grantees were each awarded  $100,000 for the critical work that they do to help ensure the health and stability of the residents within our region.

These investments do more than keep the lights on. They help trusted organizations retain staff, respond quickly to emerging needs, and continue delivering lifesaving services to families, seniors, and communities who rely on them every day. Flexible funding provides nonprofit leaders the ability to focus on impact—not simply survival.

The first organizations receiving $100,000 in core operating support are:

  • Family Connections
  • fpYouthOutcry
  • Ironbound Community Corporation
  • Jewish Family Service of Central NJ
  • Jewish Family Service of MetroWest NJ
  • Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled
  • New Jersey Citizen Action
  • Newark Community Street Team
  • NJCRI
  • North Ward Center
  • Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan NJ
  • Wynona’s House
  • Youth Development Corporation

Together, these organizations serve as anchor institutions strengthening access to healthcare, advancing equity, and supporting individuals and families at turning points in their lives. We are proud to stand with them in ensuring our community members have the resources they need to remain healthy and resilient.

The initiative follows HFNJ’s long history of being responsive to the community and adapting our grantmaking to meet the pressing needs of the time. From the initiative’s conception at our board retreat in 2025, an application and review process were swiftly set up, and we thank our professional staff and all of the trustees who reviewed and approved each application.
