HFNJ Second Quarter Grants Continue Funding for Successful Projects

All of the grants awarded this quarter are renewal grants for projects previously funded by HFNJ. Each reflects HFNJ’s commitment to deepening its ties with grantees through year-after-year funding.

“HFNJ seeks to make an impact over the long-term by cultivating ongoing relationships with community partners and funding projects that are demonstrating successful impact,” said Michael Schmidt, Executive Director/CEO of The Healthcare Foundation of NJ. “This quarter, we are delighted to provide another year of funding for four exemplary projects that have made a positive difference in the communities we serve.”

The four projects receiving renewal grants this quarter include:

• $155,000 to Youth Consultation Service (YCS) to support a second year of an Autism Evaluation, Training and Workforce Development program. Through this project, YCS is training doctoral-level clinicians in providing autism evaluations, while at the same addressing the shortfall in autism evaluation capacity in the region. These evaluations are critical for securing appropriate supportive and clinical services.
• $153,500 to Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy to support a third year of their Engage Minds, Inspire Hearts, Empower Well-Being program. The funding will support counselors who provide mental health support to students and coaching to staff.  By providing non-stigmatizing, school-based mental health services, students will be able to receive much-needed support in a familiar environment.
• $102,500 plus up to an additional $25,000 in matching funds to Postpartum Support International to support a third year of their Mind the Gap Coalition in Newark.  The project improves perinatal mental health outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women and families in Greater Newark by closing gaps in provider training, systems integration, and access to care.
• $50,000 to Breakthrough T1D to continue a third year of a project embedding type 1 diabetes (T1D) autoantibody screening as the standard of care at University Hospital in Newark. Screenings are integrated into annual pediatric and adult wellness visits, strengthening clinical workflows, and expanding follow-up monitoring and case conferencing.

The grant to Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy is part of HFNJ’s initiative launched in 2024, amidst a rise in antisemitism, to strengthen behavioral health supports for adolescents in Greater MetroWest’s Jewish community. Over three years, the initiative has committed more than $1 million to organizations serving Jewish youth.

In addition to the four renewal grants, this quarter HFNJ also provided two grants of $100,000 each in core operating support to JESPY House and Family Service League.  These grants are part of a special initiative launched in 2026 to provide core support to trusted nonprofits partners to help them sustain services in a time of funding uncertainty.  HFNJ has awarded $1.5 million to 15 nonprofits across the region through this initiative.
