Revisiting our Jewish roots: Article details HFNJ tour of Newark

July 13, 2023

On July 14, NJ Jewish News published an article by The Healthcare Foundation of NJ’s Executive Director/CEO Michael Schmidt and Grants and Community Outreach Manager Kevin McManemin which describes the Foundation’s recent bus tour of Newark.

In June, over a dozen trustees and staff members of HFNJ embarked on a unique bus tour of Newark to connect with current HFNJ grantees and reconnect with the Foundation’s roots. The organization was founded from the sale of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, (first stop on the tour) which was founded in 1901 by Newark’s thriving turn-of-the-century Jewish community.

The tour highlighted the theme of interconnectedness: connecting the past to present and strengthening the ties of Foundation trustees and staff to the community. Tour participants could trace the clear thread that ran from the Jewish emigres who founded Newark Beth Israel to the community groups working in Newark today.
