92% of the students at the Louverture Elementary School in East Orange qualify for the “Free Lunch” program and many of them come from families that suffer from food-insecurity. During the school week, hot meals are served in school but on the weekends, there is sometimes little or no food in the home. That’s when the Bass Foundation steps in with their Backpack Buddies program. Every Friday, bags of food are sent home with 85 students from the school to combat hunger in the home. The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey is pleased to support this program.
